Moissanite and silver care
Moissanite does not cloud or change color. When it looks dull, it is a film of lotion, soap or skin oil, and warm soapy water fixes it. Sterling silver can darken over time; a silver polishing cloth brings it back. Take your jewelry off for the pool, the gym and cleaning products.
Cleaning the stone
- Soak for 10 minutes in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap.
- Brush gently behind the stone with a soft toothbrush, where dirt collects.
- Rinse in clean water and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Keeping sterling silver bright
Sterling silver reacts with sulfur in the air and slowly darkens. Wipe it with a silver polishing cloth when it loses its shine. Store each piece in a closed pouch or box, away from humidity. Wearing it often actually helps it stay bright.
Take it off for
- Swimming pools and hot tubs: chlorine is hard on silver.
- The gym and heavy work: a hard knock can chip any gem and bend a prong.
- Cleaning products, hair spray and perfume: put jewelry on last.
Ultrasonic cleaners
Moissanite itself handles them, but vibration can loosen small stones in pavé settings. For pieces with many small stones, stick to soap and water.
Questions
Does moissanite get cloudy over time?
No. Moissanite does not cloud or change color. A dull look comes from buildup on the surface and washes off.
Can I shower with my moissanite ring?
Yes, water will not hurt it, but soap film builds up faster. Avoid chlorinated pools and hot tubs because of the silver.
Will sterling silver turn my finger green?
Rarely. Sterling silver 925 is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. On some skin, with sweat or lotion, the copper can leave a faint green or dark mark that washes off. Keeping the piece clean and dry helps.
